Sac Co-op Owners for Democracy and Human Rights is a diverse group of Sacramento Natural Food Co-op (SNFC) owners who want to see our Co-op operate according to the Cooperative Principles and have our Co-op’s products reflect the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
We come from Jewish, Christian, Muslim and other religious and secular backgrounds. Whether at the Co-op, in our community or in the way our nation deals with other nations and people; we strongly oppose discrimination for or against any person based on age, gender, race, ethnicity, nationality, political opinion, sexual preference, handicap, marital status or religious identification.
Reflecting the Co-op values of concern for community and sustainability, since June, 2010, Sac Co-op Owners for Human Rights has engaged the SNFC Board and membership in efforts to promote Palestinian human rights. We want to see our Co-op contribute to ending human rights violations against the Palestinian people by not carrying Israeli products until Israel stop violating those rights.
We advocating for the International Cooperative Principles, including Democratic Member Control which states that “Co-ops are democratic organizations controlled by their members, who actively participate in setting their policies and making decisions.” Active participation is more than just electing a Board of Directors, it means direct Member involvement, including having Members propose measures which are put to a vote of the full Membership according to Bylaws Section 10.06 Referendums and Initiatives.
